“This is my boardroom. It’s not a locker room”
Donald Trump made graphic remarks about women in a 2005 tape that was leaked Friday and later apologized for them, claiming it was “locker room banter.” But the Republican nominee for president once used similar words when he fired a contestant on The Apprentice.
Comedy Central’s The Daily Show dug into the archives of the NBC reality series and found a boardroom meeting in 2010 featuring a conversation between Trump and Maria Kanellis about fellow contestant Curtis Stone, an Australian chef. The WWE Diva was not fond of the way Stone handled his visit to her team.
“The reason why I said you were so arrogant is because you came into our dressing room, and you took a crap, and left the stench in the room,” she said.
After Stone called the remark “below the belt,” Trump echoed the sentiment and later asked Kanellis if she regretted her remarks. She responded, “I just said that I thought it was a little arrogant to come into our room and do that.”
“It’s a little gross, right?” Trump said. “Isn’t it sort of gross to bringing that up? It’s like disgusting. This is my boardroom. It’s not a locker room. Maria, you’re fired.”
In the 2005 tape released by The Washington Post, Trump made aggressive, sexual remarks about women during a conversation with former Access Hollywood personality Billy Bush. “You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet,” Trump said. “Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the p—y. You can do anything.”
After the recordings were published, Trump released a statement categorizing them as “locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago.”
Later, he released an apology video, in which he said, “I’ve never said I’m a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that I’m not. I’ve said and done things I regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize.”
