UPDATE: We originally published this editorial on November 28, 2016 and are republishing it today on the news that HGTV stars of ‘Fixer Upper,’ Chip and Joanna Gaines devoutly attend an anti-gay church, that believes gays are ‘sick’ and that believes in, you guessed it, home schooling.

The idea of ‘home schooling’ seems to come up a lot in TV shows about couples looking for a new home for their families, most often on HGTV. Is it just me, or does it kinda’ creep you out when a couple, often with 5 or more children, demand that their new home has a place to ‘home school’ the kids?

I will be the first to admit, as I was a nerdy, shy kid, that I probably would have opted for home schooling, regardless of how crazy my parents may have been. I really didn’t want to mix with the other kids, because I always felt a bit out of place in public situations.

And that is the point: home schooling is nothing but a safe haven for bigots, or even just people who are afraid of a world they don’t understand and who want to hide from it. But there is no hiding from the rest of the world, and a better person learns how not to hide from it, but instead, make it better.
