A winter storm watch was issued Thursday for all of metro Atlanta as North Georgia braces for more than 3 inches of snow this weekend.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel, according to the National Weather Service.

The mountains could see some of that early Friday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Between Friday night and Saturday morning, heavier amounts of snow and rain could fall over parts of North Georgia, Monahan said.

By 5 a.m. Saturday, the snow is expected to arrive in metro Atlanta.

“We could see more than 3 inches of snow/mix in parts of metro Atlanta as things stand now,” Monahan said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is loading trucks with brine to salt roads in metro Atlanta ahead of the anticipated storm, spokeswoman Natalie Dale said Wednesday.

“We have prepped and loaded trucks to brine the metro area as early as overnight [Thursday] night,” she said.

The winter storm watch, which goes into effect Friday evening, is set to expire at 1 p.m. Saturday.
