In a next level display of commitment and fanaticism–just the kind needed to actually sustain the sort of society that makes a Holocaust possible–Trump supporters defend Hitler on social media as they attack Pope Francis.

The Pope was conducting an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais when he warned against populist leaders. He said that Germany elected one in 1933, and the result was that Adolf Hitler became the country’s dictator.

“Crises provoke fear, alarm. In my opinion, the most common example of European populism is Germany in 1933… A people that was immersed in a crisis, that looked for its identity until this charismatic leader came and promised to give their identity back, and he gave them a distorted identity, and we all know what happened,” Reuters reports.

“Hitler did not steal power,” the Pope said. “He was elected by his people and then he destroyed his people.”

The Pope also said it was too soon to judge Trump and his intentions.

“We will see how he acts, what he does, and then I will have an opinion. But being afraid or rejoicing beforehand because of something that might happen is, in my view, quite unwise. It would be like prophets predicting calamities,” he said.

Trump supporters were quick to attack the Pope, however. User Paul Joseph Watson tweeted:

Interestingly, most of these users seem to have a misunderstanding about the role of religion in Marxism. At any rate, I digress.
