More than half of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s executive order temporarily banning visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries, according to a new poll, though Americans are sharply divided along party lines on the issue.
Overall, 51 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s immigration executive order and temporary refugee ban, and 45 percent approve, according to a CBS poll released on Friday.
The executive order Trump signed last week imposes a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. for visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq.
The order also bars Syrian refugees indefinitely and suspends all refugee admissions for 120 days.
Divided among party lines, 85 percent of Republicans approve of the travel ban, while just 11 percent of Democrats approve. The poll found 44 percent of Independents approve of Trump’s order.
Specifically asked about the ban on refugees entering the US, there was slightly lower approval from Republicans and one point higher approval from Democrats.
The poll found 81 percent of Republicans and 12 percent of Democrats approved of the refugee ban.
More than a third of Americans believe Trump’s executive order will make the US “safer from terrorism,” according to the poll. But the same percentage of Americans — 36 percent— believe the ban will make the US “less safe from terrorism.”
The poll found 68 percent of Republicans and 10 percent of Democrats believe the ban will make the country “safer from Terrorism.”
The right-leaning firm Rasmussen Reports had found in its own survey earlier this week that a majority approved of Trump’s order.
