An official with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that a Greene County woman was involved in an officer-involved shooting late Sunday in Cocke County.
Preliminary information released in a report on Monday said the woman, Chelsea Dunbar, 28, of Chuckey, TN, was speeding on Highway 441 and was then pursued by a National Park Service Ranger.
After stopping for the officer, the woman sped off and ran over the ranger’s foot. That was the beginning of a police pursuit that involved Gatlinburg police on Highway 321, the report said.
The chase reached Cocke County where deputies took over and tried to block her in at a parking lot at Smoky Mountain Elementary School.
Dunbar then used her car as a weapon, ramming the front of a deputy’s cruiser and then driving into a field.
Another deputy exited his car and fired his gun at the woman driver who was speeding toward him, the report said. The deputy was hit by a car and transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
Dunbar was shot and flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Her condition has not been released.
TBI Special Agents are now in charge of the investigation.
